Video Highlights

With over 200 practitioners in attendance, GEFI’s Unlocking Islamic Finance Summit was the largest Islamic finance-focused event at COP28.

The Summit, hosted by the DIFC on Tuesday 5th December 2023, provided a high-profile platform to explore the role Islamic finance can play in addressing the climate emergency. Following keynote addresses from Baroness Vere, Parliamentary Secretary, His Majesty’s Treasury, Dr Zamir Iqbal is Vice President, Finance, and Chief Financial Officer, Islamic Development Bank and Boby Hernawan, Director, Ministry of Finance, Republic of Indonesia, the Summit included:

  • A fireside chat on the state of the industry with Iqbal Khan
  • A panel, featuring Jupiter Asset Management, Sedco Capital and Martin Currie looking at Islamic investing
  • A regulator’s fireside with insights shared by London Stock Exchange Group, Securities Commission Malaysia, and the Dubai Financial Services Authority
  • A green and sustainable Islamic finance products panel with DDCAP Group, Gatehouse Bank, S&P Global and Mercer
  • A scholar fireside with Datuk Prof Dr Mohamad Akram Bin Laldin
  • A closing keynote from Rafe Haneef

As well as the aforementioned deep-dive technical discussions with experts from Bahrain, Indonesia, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, UAE and the UK, during the Summit, the Global Taskforce for Islamic Finance and the SDGs launched its Key Outputs Report, the High-Level Working Group on Green and Sustainable Sukuk published its Financing a Sustainable Future report  and the UKIFC launched the Secretariat for its Tayyib project.

The Summit received overwhelmingly positive feedback with several speakers and delegates calling for similar events to take place at future COPs.
